Weekly Update – 18th March 2012

THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in organising last Saturday’s Community Consultation, especially to David Price.  Over 40 residents and representatives of Broomhall and Broomhill gathered for an informative, edifying and fruitful day.

 

CONGRATULATIONS to Anne Padget who has been appointed the next Lay Chair of Hallam Deanery Synod.  She will serve alongside the newly appointed Area Dean, the Rev’d Dr James Grenfell.

 

MENTOR We are looking for someone who would be willing to offer informal pastoral support to a middle-aged male who has recently moved into permanent accommodation after months of rough-sleeping.  Please see Ian asap.

 

SHAN will be ordained Priest by Bishop Steven in St Mark’s on Sunday 20 May at 5.00 pm.  This represents an important development in Shan’s ministry so please make every effort to be there.  Thank you.

 

JELLY, our Student Worker, has been recommended to train for ordained ministry within the Church of England.  She will commence this Autumn.

 

SUNDAY LUNCH has got a place saved for YOU. (Yes, that’s right – YOU.) We serve up at 12.15pm each Sunday, 2 courses at very reasonable rates, and would love to welcome you.

LENT LUNCHES will be served every Thursday at 12.30 pm throughout Lent.  Please see the flyers.  If you can provide bread on 29th, please sign up on the sheet. All welcome.

DISCUSSION GROUP takes place after a quiet communion on Thursday mornings. For the next few weeks it will concentrate on Janet Morley’s new book.  Please note, this group is in addition to the ‘Practising Hopefulness’ Lent groups.  All welcome.

PASSION SUNDAY The choir will be singing Faure’s Requiem, as well as Vos Omnes, Rutter’s Benedictus and John Ireland’s Greater Love Hath No Man as part of next week’s Passion Sunday Evening service at 6.30pm.  All welcome.

CRC SPRING CONFERENCE This will be with Tariq Ramadan, Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University, and is entitled Relating to the Other: A New Vision for Religious Pluralism.  It promises to be a stimulating and enjoyable day.  Details at the back of church.

FREE TO A GOOD HOME Two front row circle tickets for a concert at the City Hall, Saturday 31 March, 7.00 pm. The Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse will be playing Debussy, Saint-Saens and Berlioz.  Please speak to Briony or call her on 235 0174.

MIDWEEK WELCOMERS If you would be willing to welcome visitors to St Mark’s and can spare 2 hours (10.00 am-12 noon, 12noon-2.00pm or 2.00-4.00 pm) please have a word with Anne.

SEWING Broomhall Welcome Place is making aprons and we’re looking for suitable cotton fabric. If you enjoy sewing, please come to the Broomhall Centre on Weds 3.00-5.00 pm (bring your own work along) as there are always people wanting a little guidance. Thanks! Sue.

2012 PLEDGE APPEAL – LATEST POSITION. We are grateful to have had 96 responses so far with additional giving of £7,302 (including recovered tax) promised for 2012 towards our budget target of £9,500.  However, further income is still needed to help balance the budget for this year.  Consequently, if you have yet to respond or are not in our pledged giving scheme, please return a pledge form as soon as possible.  If needed, spare pledge forms can be found at the back of the church. STEWARDSHIP RESPONSE There are lots of ways in which we can become more involved at St Mark’s, however long we have been coming.  Please complete a yellow Stewardship Response and place it in the box at the back church.  Thank you!

ARE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLANS JUST WHAT YOU NEED? Are they right for your Community? The Government’s Neighbourhood Plans initiative is shortly to become law within the new Localism Act. This presents both opportunities and a challenge to community organisations. ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETINGS will be held on Wednesday 25 April.  There will be a shared supper at 7.00 pm, followed by the meeting at 8.00 pm.  All welcome.

 

TROUBLEMAKERS’ WALK: Following the Auction of Promises, this walk will be held at 3.00 pm on Sunday 22 April and 3.00 pm on Sunday 6 May starting at Paradise Square. ST MARK’S WEEKEND BOOKINGS 21-23 September 2012.  There is now someone at the back of church every Sunday to take bookings as well as further payments for those who have already booked.  Details and application forms are available.  This is definitely an event for ALL the church community!  Everyone who books will be given a PAYMENT CARD. Please look in your pigeonhole for yours if you have already booked.  This will state how much you have paid / are to pay.  Please bring them every time you make a payment.  Many thanks.

 

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT is held annually and has proved to be very successful in promoting the practice of Fairtrade and educating both businesses and consumers. Look out for the Fairtrade logo as you can now buy bedding, clothing and household goods bearing the Fairtrade mark, as well as food.  Purchasing these items helps producers in developing countries improve trading conditions and promotes sustainability.  To find out more about fair trade: www.fairtrade.org.uk.

 

LENTEN POETRY GROUP St. Andrew’s is holding a poetry group each week in Lent.  Please see the board in the foyer for details of where they will be and the poets being looked at.  People are welcome to bring their own poems as well.
