Weekly Update – 20th May 2012

SHAN will be ordained Priest and ANNE will be licensed as a Reader by Bishop Steven at St Mark’s TONIGHT 5.00 pm.  This will be followed by a buffet supper. 

 

ORGAN VOLUNTARIES Today’s voluntaries are organ arrangements of two of Grieg’s Four Psalms (op. 74), both on Ascension themes. The titles translate as ‘Jesus Christ is ascended’ and ‘In Heaven’.

 

BROOMHILL FESTIVAL, 14-24 June, is almost here!  Festival brochures are now available – please take as many as you can distribute.  SIGN-UP LISTS for events hosted at St Mark’s are now up in the foyer – please add your name where you can.  Also, why not visit the new Festival WEBSITE for more information and booking (www.broomhillfestival.org.uk).

 

GARDEN PARTY on 16 June at 2.00pm –  this year it helps to kick off the Broomhill Festival!  Volunteers for stalls please see Caroline F and for setting up/clearing away see Pete R.  Please bring donations of books and quality gifts to the church vestry.  This event is fun for all the family with music, games, a cafe and market stalls.  Please speak to Caroline F, Pete R or Sue H for more information.

 

SUNDAY 8 JULY will be a special day: all-age worship (including the baptism of Rose Ilsley … parish lunch … St Mark’s very own Olympics.) More details soon.  Please aim to be there.

PENTECOST There will be a joint CTBB service on NEXT SUNDAY 10.30 am at the Beacon at Broomhill, followed by a community lunch.  There is no 10.00 am service at St Mark’s. All welcome at the Beacon – the more the merrier! 

ATTENTION ALL BOOK LOVERS

Our library has expanded and is now housed on shelves either side of the narthex.  As a result, there are some books to be lovingly disposed of and we are offering these FOR SALE on 10 June after the 10.00 am service.  We look forward to seeing you there.

PV OUTPUT DISPLAY, showing instantaneous power together with total energy generated and CO2 savings, has been installed in the entrance foyer above the community notice board.

SOUP RUN This is a service that is greatly appreciated by those who turn up, and some of our stocks are getting low. We now have plenty of tins, but if anyone could supply any clothes  – especially men’s socks and jumpers – all donations would be gratefully received. Many thanks. Gary.

ST MARK’S WEEKEND Only 19 weeks to go!  Are you among the 80+ who have already booked?  If not, please complete an application asap so we know how many rooms to reserve.  Don’t forget, there are some great discounts (under 5s – free; 5-18 year olds – £50; students – £50; non-residents – £70) as well as reductions available for all ages if that would enable you to come.  See the stall in church.

CONGREGATIONAL LIST The new congregational list is NOW OUT!  If you are on the list and would like a copy please let Anne know.  It is 50p for a printed version, or it can be e-mailed to you.

ECCLESFIELD CHURCH TOUR will take place on Sunday 15 July at 3.00pm.

 

MAY MESSENGER is now out for 60p! Subscribers’ copies are in the pigeonholes. 

ROUNDHEADS AND CAVALIERS TOGETHER! Royalist or Republican, the Jubilee Bank Holiday is definitely an excuse for a party. Bring your picnics and your friends and we’ll all eat together on the Green on 3 June, after the 10.00 am service. Tables, chairs and soft drinks provided, plus children’s activities. Then we are all invited to continue the festivities in Broomhall on 4 June. More details on the posters in the entrance hall.

CHRISTIAN AID

MAY DAY TREK – Approx 15 members of St Marks took part in this event. It’s not too late to sponsor them! The sponsor form is available at the back of church and we’ll collect sponsor money over the next few weeks.

13 – 19 MAY – CHRISTIAN AID WEEK. A big thank you to all those who took part in the house-to-house collections in the parish last week. Please return the filled envelopes, etc. in a clearly labeled bag to Alison or Helen today, or bring them to Anne in the church office during opening hours any weekday morning. If there are any problems please contact Alison(2214578) or Helen(2584241).

7 JULY – SHEFFIELD NIGHT HIKE from Lodge Moor to Hathersage. Further details available from Alison and Helen.

 

BIBLE, ZIONISM & PALESTINE A conference to explore the role of the bible in theology and politics in Israel and Palestine today, arranged by the University Biblical Studies Department will take place at St Mark’s over 24-26 May.  Further details, contact Michael Sandford: bzpconference@sheffield.ac.uk.

 

DEANERY EVENT exploring different ways of engaging in prayer is happening THIS THURSDAY at St. Luke’s, Lodge Moor at 7.00pm.  All welcome. 

CANTORES SPRING RECITAL with Jonathan Lazell, piano, in aid of the charity Lost Chord, an innovative charity using interactive musical stimuli to improve the quality of life for those suffering from dementia.  Music by Brahms, Debussy, Michael Haydn and Monteverdi. St John’s Ranmoor, 7.30 pm on Saturday 26 May. Tickets £10/£7 at the door or from Philip Booth, 255 0634.

SHEFFIELD PRIDE Saturday 2 June, 12-7 Endcliffe Park.  We are running a stall with St Andrew’s Psalter Lane so there’ll be a positive Christian presence at Sheffield’s largest festival for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities. Thank you to ALL who have volunteered, it promises to be a great day!

FURNITURE We are still looking for a chest of drawers, wardrobe, dining table and chairs for someone who has recently moved into settled accommodation from rough sleeping.  Please contact Anne or a member of the clergy.  Thank you.
