Introducing Lent Course 2013 … ‘You Wretched Corinthians!’

Case studies in the life of a liberal church with attitude

THIS YEAR’S Lent course features Paul’s tumultuous, difficult and yet ultimately enlightening relationship with a young spirited church in Corinth.  Using his letters to this Christian community, we will focus on the following themes and explore their contemporary significance. This will be supported by a Sermon series.

Download course booklet here.

Week 1 – Christianity comes to Corinth

How did Paul go about establishing a church in Corinth? What led people to join this fractious community? What makes us join our equally fractious community?

Week 2 – Divisions at the Lord’s Supper

How did Paul deal with problems of inequality in the church that emerged during celebrations of the Lord’s Supper? How do we approach similar challenges?

Week 3 – Christian living in a pagan society

Focusing on the issues raised by meat offered to idols, how does Paul respond to divergent attitudes among members as he seeks to create unity?  What are our modern equivalents to ‘meat offered to idols’?

Week 4 – Morality, ethics and Christian discipline

What did Paul have to say about maintaining a Christ-like identity in a society characterized by radically different moral standards?  Was he a puritan, libertine or legalist?  What ethical standards inform our Christian community?

Week 5 – Church and the world

In what ways did Paul challenge the secular norms within society and what led him to acquiesce at other times?  How counter-cultural and acquiescent are we called to be?

Proposed Lent Groups

Groups will start in the week following the first Sunday in Lent, that is the week commencing 19 February, and will run for five weeks, finishing the week before Holy Week.  Each session will last for approximately 90 minutes.

REVIEW of this year’s Lent Course plus input from Ian on other burning issues in the Corinthian Correspondence on Sunday 21 April, 6.00 – 7.30 pm in the Upper Room. All welcome!

See You Wretched Corinthians! (flyer) to find a day, time and venue that suits you.

Then sign up on the list at the back of church or phone the Church Office 01142663613.
