Weekly Update – 24th March 2013

ELECTORAL ROLL 2013 Every six years, we are required to prepare a new Electoral Roll from scratch, rather than simply revise the existing one.  Please complete an Application Form and either place it in the designated box in church or give it to Peter Ryder, our Electoral Roll Officer, by 31 March.  The Electoral Roll is the membership list of St Mark’s, conferring rights to vote at the Annual Parochial Meeting and to serve on the Parochial Church Council.  The size of our Electoral Roll will also determine how many Deanery Synod representatives we are entitled to elect and it is Deanery Synod reps who vote for the Diocese’s delegates on General Synod.

LOOK OUT for Beki Chapman (Reader-in-training) and Alison Creasey (Ordinand) who are undertaking placements at St Mark’s over the coming weeks.  Please say hello and help them to feel at home.

EXPERIENCING PESACH In place of our regular Maundy Thursday service, an opportunity to participate in a Passover-type meal presided over by Keith Sayliss of the local Reform Jewish Congregation.  In addition to the consumption of symbolic foods, a simple vegetarian supper will be served.  THIS THURSDAY at 7.30 pm.  No admission charge, retiring collection.  Further details at the back of church.  Please sign up if you’re planning on coming.

NEXT OF KIN The vicar is happy to hold confidentially details of next of kin for use in cases of emergency.

GOOD FRIDAY CRAFTS 9.30-11.30, an all-age activity morning followed by a Godly Play story in a short act of worship. All welcome!

LIONSTALE – REHEARSALS begin on Sunday 21 April, 2.30-4.30 pm in church (this will be the regular weekly slot!). If you’ve already signed up to do something, please come along.  If you haven’t, but would like to act, sing, play an instrument, work on props, sound or lighting, or just have a go at something then please come along as well.  All ages welcome!

OFFERTORY COMMITMENT CARDS For those of you who give money to the Church regularly via a standing order or other means, the PCC has agreed, initially for a trial period of three months, that small ‘commitment’ cards will be available for you to put in the collection plate during the offertory.  They can be picked up from a box at the back of church before the service. Those who are not pledged givers are encouraged to support the Church through making a cash offering on the collection plate and, if tax payers, by using a yellow Gift Aid envelope. Please supply feedback on the commitment cards to either myself, the clergy or the Church Wardens. Thanks – David Ryder.

DRCONGO UPDATE: Many thanks to all at St Marks who contributed to the repairing and re-equipping of the school in Minova wrecked by the Congo army in November. Between St Marks and two Sheffield schools we sent a total of $1500 which was put to good use. On 12 April I am taking part in a SPONSORED RUN organised by colleagues from the international coffee industry to raise money to support the women affected by the atrocities in which over 125 were raped. The money will be split between providing ongoing medical support for them, and establishing longer term economic empowerment initiatives for women in Sopacdi. I would be grateful for sponsors. There is a form at the back. I will visit Sopacdi in June, and will report back then. Thank you, Richard Hide
