Weekly Update – 18th August 2013

CONGRATULATIONS to Mike Kok on his appointment to be our next Worker with Students and Young Adults.  Mike, who has been a part of St Mark’s whilst undertaking doctoral research in biblical studies at Sheffield University, will take up this post in September.  We look forward to supporting him in this vital ministry.

ALSO to Rev’d Liz Anson, a member of St Mark’s, who has agreed to serve as honorary Chaplain to Night Service, commencing in September. Thank you!

WELCOME to members of Mental Health Uganda (Gulu) who are currently on secondment in Sheffield and worshipping at St Mark’s.  MHU is committed to empowering persons with mental illness to lead dignified lives in war-torn parts of Uganda.

REV’D NEIL BOWLER, currently Rector of Whiston and Area Dean of Rotherham, has been appointed the next Vicar of St John’s Ranmoor and is expected to take up this post in Autumn.

ANNIVERSARY PREACHERS As part of the anniversary celebrations we have invited a number of former clergy from St Mark’s to preach during August, September and October (for dates, please see the Anniversary ‘flyer’). It would be good to offer them hospitality, perhaps by an invitation to lunch. If anyone is willing to help in this way would they please let me know? Many thanks. Mike Hunt.

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT there will be a concert to celebrate the musical life of St Mark’s on Saturday, 28 September, the anniversary weekend. If will feature works by St Mark’s musicians  past and present, including songs from Cousin John and Lionstale. If you would like to be part of it,  there will be rehearsals as follows: after choir practice on Thursday 19 September; after 10.00 service on Sunday 22 September; on the day at  4.00pm. Or see Eve Saunders, David Sanderson or Frances Gray in the meantime.  All welcome –  a date for all our diaries.

50TH ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND – HOSPITALITY. Refreshments will be served during the book launch and the concert, and there will be a lunch on the Sunday. This will require lots of help! Please see the sign-up sheet for more details, or contact Briony by phone or email.

HARVEST We’ll be needing lots of preserves to sell at Harvest Festival in aid of CHRISTIAN AID, so please start your bottling and jam and chutney making now!

PCC REPORT Please find a copy of the summary for the July PCC meeting pinned up on the board in the foyer along with a copy of the approved minutes from May’s meeting. (There was no meeting in June).

The summary is on the notice board instead of in the Mark’s Messenger this month because the September edition of the Mark’s Messenger is a special Anniversary edition with extra articles.

OLIVER! Congratulations to Luke Speddings, who will be performing as part of the ‘blue team’ in Oliver! at the Crucible Theatre.  The performances are from 4th December until 25th January.  Well done Luke!

BROOMHALL FESTIVAL Saturday 31 August 2013 from 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm. The Broomhall Festival aims to promote ‘Unity in the Community’.  All offers of help to Sue or Robin Story ASAP please!

GALA DAY at the Sheffield Jesus Centre on Broomspring Lane TODAY at 3.00 pm.  There will be a Charity Shop, Charity Auction, Face Painting, Medieval Stocks, Bouncy Castle, Cake Stall, Home-made Cakes and a Craft Stall.  In fact – Fun for all the Family!!  Admission Free.

STAMPS Would anybody who collects stamps like to receive a varied and interesting package of unmounted stamps?  If so, please contact Sarah Frost on 266 8685.

CRC ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE To celebrate its 10th and St Mark’s 50th Anniversary CRC has invited James Crossley of Sheffield University to deliver a day conference on ‘The Legacy of Mark’s Gospel,’ – Saturday 14 September, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm; tickets: non-members £12, CRC/PCN; members £10; students £5.  Booking forms on the CRC display.

The organisation SPEAK is running a weekend gathering to explore how we can be prophetic voices for peace, justice and creation in an age of militarism, land-grabs and toxic monocultures.  It is to be held at St. Mark’s on 6th-9th Sept. with an optional Day of Action on the 9th Sept. Students/ unwaged – £27. Waged – £37. (We don’t want anyone to be excluded because of price. Please call 0208 9819441 and we’ll come to an agreement on price which is suitable for you). COACH TRIP TO YORKSHIRE COAST Saturday 7th September 2013. St. John’s, Ranmoor are having a day at the Yorkshire Coast and inviting people to join them. This will provide a few hours in Filey and Scarborough and an opportunity for those who want to walk (7.5miles) to stretch their legs. £12 for adults and £6 for children.  For more information see the poster at the back of church or contact secretary@stjohnsranmoor.org.uk
