Weekly Update 9th March


To date for this year total extra giving of £8,995 (including recovered tax) is promised towards the £13,400 target. Grateful thanks to all who have responded. However a few have yet to do so. Please therefore return your pledge form immediately. Spares are available at the back of the Church. PASSIONTIDE CHORAL SERVICE will take place at 6.00pm on Palm Sunday.  The service will incorporate the Requiem by Henry Walford Davies, first published in 1915 and composed “In Sacred Memory of all those who have fallen in the war”.  The service will also include a number of thematic organ devotions.  All welcome.

SHAN will be licensed as Chaplain to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Assistant Priest of St Mark’s by Bishop Peter on Sunday 23 March at 10.00 am.  Lunch will be served afterwards.

GOD-TALK is the title of Ian’s latest ‘Living thinking faith’ booklet.  Copies available on the card stall.  50p donation.

 CAROL WALTER is in intermediary care after breaking her arm and would appreciate visits or cards to Jasmin Court 40 Roe Lane S3 9AJ. Visiting hours unrestricted until 8.00 pm.

DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS 2014 marks 100 years of the Sheffield Diocese. There are several events. Please see the poster at the back and let Anne P. know if you want to attend any of them.


Looking forward to being with you for Shan’s licencing on 23 March.  In the meantime, please continue to work together, to support one another and to welcome the stranger. Keep faith!


Mike Hunt, Gary Grief, and Sue Hammersley are immensely grateful for your support during Ian’s absence.  Please continue to contact all three of us with any concerns.

ALAN BIRCHALL died peacefully in hospital on Wednesday 26 February following complications resulting from his recent fall. Alan will be remembered by many at St Mark’s for his quiet loyalty and artistic talent. The altar frontal, used during the seasons of Christmas and Epiphany, was designed by him and will serve as a fitting memorial to his life and contribution to this church.

ADRIAN THATCHER will lead our next CRC Conference, ‘From Exclusion to Inclusion: Marriage for All,’ THIS SATURDAY, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm.  Adrian, an Anglican theologian and Visiting Professor at Exeter University, is an internationally recognised authority in the sphere of human sexuality, gender identity and marriage. Tickets: £14 (non-members), £12 (members) & £5 (students/unwaged).

AUSTERITY DINNER hosted by Sheffield Interfaith to be held at Shirley House Interfaith Centre (31 Psalter Lane) at 6.00 pm on Thursday 20th March.  A very simple meal will be served, we will share some thoughts about hunger from different faith traditions; and guests are requested to bring contributions of tinned and dried foods for Firvale Foodbank.  No need to book – the more that come, the less food for each!

LAUNCH OF ST MARK’S GARDEN PROJECT  EVENT!! 23rd March. Vegetarian Sunday lunch, and ‘Orchard Planting on the Green’ to start this project with a chance to chat over a delicious meal and get out your wellies and spades!! See the Climate Change notice board in the lobby for details. 

ORGAN APPEAL UPDATE The Appeal Fund is currently £98,200 just £1,800 short of our target.  Further pledges/donations are welcome. Please send to our Treasurer, David Ryder. The contract for the work has been signed and is expected to start by the end of May 2014.

DOWN MEMORY LANE EVENT:  Saturday 15 March from 2 to 5 pm at the Broomhall Centre, Broomhall. Bring old photos etc to share with Broomhall History Project. All welcome. If possible contact Jennie Beard  on ourbroomhall@gmail.com or just turn up.

LIVING THE QUESTIONS Interested in discussing matters of faith? The ‘Living the Questions’ group meets monthly in the Upper Room. We offer an opportunity to explore aspects of the Christian journey in a non-judgemental way, and a place of mutual support and encouragement.  Meetings are on Wednesdays, 7.30pm for refreshments, ready for a prompt 8pm start. Biscuits are provided – and essential – and meetings wind up by 9.30 at the latest. ELECTORAL ROLL, the church’s membership list, is being updated. If you are not on the Roll, please complete a form which is available at the back of Church and place it in the box provided.
