STREETS AHEAD Work on improving roads, pavements, lighting and drainage will commence in the parish THIS WEEK. 

INDEPENDENT AGE, the national support community for older people, needs volunteer befrienders in Sheffield. Volunteers receive a full induction and ongoing training. Sheffield Night Hike takes place on Saturday 28 June and is a 17 mile dusk-till-dawn trek from Lodge Moor to Hathersage and back. THURSDAY DISCUSSION GROUP Join us on Thursdays from 11.15-12.15 to discuss Poetry (1st Thursday of the month), Bible Study (3rd Thursday of the month) and ‘Sharing our Journey’ (2nd and 4th Thursday of the month). All are welcome and no preparation is necessary. ‘Sharing our Journey’ is a way of sharing, listening and reflecting on our Life journey together, so just bring yourself. Coffee /tea and biscuits provided.

AMNESTY FOR BROOMHILL Over the centuries, Sheffield is well known for its dissidents and troublemakers campaigning for citizens’ rights. As part of the Broomhill Festival, David Price will talk on Human rights – campaigning in 19th Century Sheffield on Wednesday, 11 June 2014 at 7.00 pm  in St Mark’s Upper room. Donations of £2 on the door. Any surplus will be shared between the Festival charities and the Sheffield Amnesty Group, which is organising this event.

BAKEWELL GREEN FESTIVAL – Celebrating Sustainable Living in the Peak District, on Saturday 12 July, 10.00 am – 6.00 pm, Agricultural Business Centre, Bakewell.  Free Entry. Poster in the Foyer.

There are a wide range of events happening over the next couple of weeks, including lunchtime music recitals, family fun events and an opportunity to hear speakers talking about key political, economic and social issues affecting our community. GARDEN PARTY – 14 JUNE  Contributions for the Treasures, books and Toys stalls are welcome. Bring them on a Sunday, or contact Jane or Briony if you need transport. Helpers are still needed for Children’s games, plants and elsewhere; do please sign up or get in touch.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Broomhill Festival is here and there are lots of events, mostly at St Mark’s, needing helpers to sell tickets, staff the box office and serve refreshments. Please sign up at the back of church – we need a small army!

20th ANNIVERSARY of women’s ordination to the priesthood will be celebrated here on Sunday 15 June at 10.00 am when Sue will preside and Rev’d Dr Sarah Hills, recently appointed Canon for Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral, will preach. The Diocese will also be celebrating on Saturday 14 June at 11.00 am at the cathedral when the preacher will be the Venerable Jane Sinclair.  All welcome.
