JESUS:HEALER & EXORCIST Ian Wallis will be visiting St. Mark’s again when he will be the speaker at the next CRC conference on Saturday 16 April.  He will be addressing questions about Jesus’ reputation as a healer and exorcist, and the implications of this for the sick, oppressed and marginalised.  More details and booking forms at the back of church on the CRC stall or ask John Schofield or Anne Padget   

 

COACH TO BIRMINGHAM – MAY 14TH We hope to run a coach to Birmingham for the Marcus Borg lecture on May 14th.  The cost of the return travel will be £17.  We must have bookings before March 21st in order to be able to confirm the booking with the coach company.   Booking forms for the Marcus Borg Day itself are on the CRC stall.  Please see Anne Padget, Helen Fisher or John Schofield for more details.

 

FOLK FOR REFUGEE CONCERT A group of Sheffield folk performers are holding a concert on Saturday 9 April at 7.30pm at St. Mark’s Church in aid of the refugee work of the British Red Cross. PCC 2016-2017 At our APCM on April 17, we will be electing PCC members for the next year. The PCC makes decisions on a broad range of issues affecting church life and helps to shape the vision and strategy of what we do here at St Mark’s, so we’re keen to invite people of all ages and stages of life to stand for election. Nomination Forms are available at the back of church, and need to be in by 12.30pm on Friday 15 April.  Please put them in the box provided.  Current PCC members are happy to chat to you informally if you’d like to know more about what is involved. ELECTORAL ROLL The electoral roll is due to be revised at the end of March.  If you are not already on it and wish to be able to vote at the APCM please complete a form at the back of church and return it to Peter Ryder by NEXT SUNDAY 20th March.

ISLAM AWARENESS WEEK: CONNECTING COMMUNITIES.

It is our privilege to be hosting a significant event during IAW this year, THIS FRIDAY 18 MARCH with speakers from different faith communities and food from different cultures.  Please take flyers and invite your friends and neighbours.  This is a joint event with the Islamic Society of Britain.  If you are willing to make a dessert please write on the flipchart at the back. All welcome.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Abdool is  looking for helpers with several events during the week.  If you think you can help please speak to Sue.   Gary and Sue

CONGRATULATIONS! KIM WILLIS has been recommended for training for ordination following her recent Bishops’ Advisory Panel.  Keep praying – she might need them even more now!  Sue

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK this year is May 15th-21st. It seems far ahead, but we’re already on the lookout for people to help with the house-to-house collection in the parish. The money collected in this way provides a substantial proportion of Sheffield’s contribution to Christian Aid during the week. Please think about helping with this-and thanks to those who have already committed themselves to this. Helen Hillman tel: 2584241.

DIOCESAN SYNOD Well done to Cath Williamson for becoming one of the 11 Lay Diocesan Synod Reps from our Deanery.   We look forward to her contribution and appreciate the value that this will give in maintaining – and progressing – a liberal voice in the Diocese.  Anne Padget

GIFT AID Thanks to all who have completed and returned their pledge forms and also their signed yellow Gift Aid forms. If you do pay income tax but have not yet signed and returned the yellow Gift Aid form to me, will you please do so asap – I need them to claim back tax after 5th April 2016.  If you no longer have the yellow form and need a replacement please let me know. GIRLS’ RIGHT TO EDUCATION Sierra Leone schoolgirls, who become pregnant, sometimes by their teachers, are being banned from classes and examinations as official policy – a clear breach of their right to an education. Please sign an Amnesty postcard (available at the back of church) to get the Sierra Leone Government to change its policy.  Robin Story

SAD NEWS In the last few weeks we have heard of the deaths of Eva Wilkinson, a stalwart resident of Broomhill, active member of the Festival Committee and local historian; and also of  Mary Sharrock, formidable teacher and friend of many at St Mark’s.  Our condolences go to both families. Eva’s funeral will be held at Hutcliffe Wood on THIS TUESDAY at 3.00pm. Mary’s funeral will be here at St Mark’s THIS FRIDAY at 12.45pm

FUNDRAISING Mark Ansell is taking part in Ride London, cycling 100 miles in London in July & Sheffield Half Marathon in April to raise money for Tommy’s,  the miscarriage charity. A donation – however small – would be gratefully received.  To read more and donate: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.

SHEFFIELD POEM-A-THON 2nd April 2016, 10am – 6pm at The Art House, Backfields, Sheffield S1 4HJ. FREE ENTRY. A  relay of 48 poets will each read for 8 minutes throughout the day.  Audience members can join at any time throughout the day, staying for as long as they wish.  There will be refreshments, a bookstall and information about our charity.
