Weekly Update – 26th March

BISHOP OF SHEFFIELD People in this parish and across the diocese have responded to the news of Bishop Philip’s withdrawal in different ways and often with mixed feelings.  Many of us expressed our concerns with honesty and integrity and we deplore any personal attacks he may have received.  We encourage you to take time this Lent to pray for him and for this diocese.  Sue, Sarah and ShanWEEK of PRAYER 3rd-10th APRIL  Bishop Peter has invited the whole diocese to participate in a week of prayer for unity, healing and reconciliation, leading up to the Chrism Eucharist on Mon 10th April  at 7pm in the Cathedral. NEW GROUPS After Easter we hope to develop groups to have oversight of the areas of study/learning and liturgy/worship. These will include PCC members and other people who are interested. If you would like to be part of one of these groups please see Sue/ Sarah

1ST MAY- SHEFFIELD MAY DAY TREK registration is now open. 2 routes of 6 and 11 miles leaving St Luke’s Lodge Moor from 9:30am. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA The Sheffield Chorale present a concert of opera and show/musical chorus masterpieces including Monteverdi’s striking and poignant ‘Lamento d’Arianna’.   Sat. 1 April, 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Church, Millhouses.  Tickets from David Ryder or on the door –  see poster in church entrance for further details.

FUNERAL OF MARGARET LYONS Many of you will be saddened to hear the news of Margaret Lyon’s death following a short respiratory illness. Her funeral will take place here at St Mark’s tomorrow afternoon, Monday 27th March at 2pm. Please hold Margaret and all those who grieve for her in your prayers. Sue, Sarah and ShanMARK OAKLEY’S LATEST BOOK The Splash of Words: Believing in Poetry is now in the library. It has had marvellous reviews and is a very rewarding book. There are two copies but demand may be high up to Easter so please only borrow for two weeks at a time to give others a chance to look at it.  Maureen Bownas

CHURCHWARDEN As many of you will be aware, I will be stepping down as Churchwarden from April to focus on my studies. I have found this to be an incredibly rewarding role at what has been a challenging but exciting period for St Mark’s and would be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in taking on this position at the APCM. MARK’S MESSENGER Thank you toCarol Rowe, who has been one of the  Messenger editors since 2011but has now left the editing team. The May Messenger will be edited by Frances Gray, who would welcome articles.  If you are interested in joining the editing team, please contact Frances or David Price.

APCM The Annual Parochial Church Meetings will take place on SUNDAY 23 APRIL at 11.15am after a shorter 10.00am Eucharist.  These will be followed by a Bring & Share Lunch, to which all are welcome. The sign-up sheet will be available soon.   Sue / BrionyPLEDGE APPEAL FOR 2017 – We are blessed to have received promises for extra giving this year of approximately £7,700 (including recovered tax) towards our preferred target of £9,900.  We still hope to receive further promises as some church members are yet to respond.  Consequently, if you have not done so, please return your pledge form as soon as possible (even if you are unable to increase your giving).  Spare Pledge Appeal packs including a pledge form are available in the foyer.  Thank you.  David Ryder. CHRISTIAN AID SOUTH SUDAN FAMINE APPEAL. Many thanks to those who have already given towards this. Throughout Lent there’ll be an opportunity to contribute  at the Sunday 10o’clock and Night services. If anyone is interested in donating at 8a.m. please contact Helen Hillman on 0114 2584241

PRAYER STATIONS to augment our worship during Lent, a number of prayer stations linked to our theme of pilgrimage through prayer will be found in church. They offer an opportunity for all ages to encounter faith in an alternative  tangible, meaningful, experiential, and reflective way. Shan

REFUGEE APPEAL Abdool from the Broomhill Mosque is close to filling the last of 5 container-loads of aid to go to refugees – this one is bound for Greece. He’s appealing for donations so he can bulk-buy the foodstuffs they so desperately need. If you feel able to give, feel free to talk to Gary, or go to http://familiesrelief.org.uk/ to donate online.

PCC 2017-2018 At our APCM we will be electing PCC members for the next year. The PCC makes decisions on a broad range of issues affecting church life and helps to shape the vision and strategy of what we do at St Mark’s, so we’re keen to invite people of all ages and stages of life to stand for election. Nomination Forms are at the back – please put them in the box provided.  Current PCC members are happy to chat to you informally if you’d like to know more about what is involved. Sarah MooreELECTORAL ROLLThe electoral roll is due to be revised at the end of March (please note that this is just a revision and not a new roll). If you wish to stand for PCC election you must be on the electoral roll. PEAK PILGRIMAGE  We continue our pilgrimage on Saturday 1st April when we will walk  from Bakewell to Curbar a walk of 7-8 miles. On the way we will visit three churches, Edensor St. Peter, Baslow St. Anne, and Curbar All Saints. Please book on to the walk by Wednesday 29th March and let us know if you need a lift or can offer lifts.
