Weekly Update – April 2nd

LAUNCH OF ISLAM AWARENESS WEEK. All are cordially invited to the launch of the 2017 Islam Awareness Week on Monday, 3 April 2017 at 6.30 p.m at 6&8 Chippingham Place, Attercliffe Road, Sheffield S93SA. The theme is “More in Common” and the aim is to break down barriers at this particular time. Robin Story NEW GROUPS After Easter we hope to develop groups to have oversight of the areas of study/learning and liturgy/worship. These will include PCC members and other people who are interested. SOUTH SUDAN AND EAST AFRICA FAMINE APPEAL Thanks to all who have contributed towards this, we have been able to send to Christian Aid £874.40, which will hopefully be in time to attract matched funding from the government. There’s still an opportunity to contribute to the fund through the bucket collections today and every Sunday until the end of Lent. Don’t forget to Gift Aid your donation if you can.

 

CHRISTAN AID WEEK this year is May 14-20th, which will soon be upon us! Many thanks to those who have already agreed to help with the house to house collection in the parish. This is a good way to witness to our commitment, as Christians and as members of St. Mark’s, to supporting the poorest communities in God’s world. WEEK of PRAYER 3rd-10th APRIL Bishop Peter has invited the whole diocese to participate in a week of prayer for unity, healing and reconciliation, leading up to the Chrism Eucharist on Mon 10th April at 7pm in the Cathedral. See www.sheffield.anglican.org/news for more details. Sarah

CHURCHWARDEN As many of you will be aware, I will be stepping down as Churchwarden from April to focus on my studies. I have found this to be an incredibly rewarding role at what has been a challenging but exciting period for St Mark’s and would be happy to talk to anyone who is interested in taking on this position at the APCM. PEAK PILGRIMAGE We conclude our pilgrimage on Saturday 8th April when we will walk from Curbar to Eyam a walk of 7- 8 miles. On the way we will visit the churches at Grindleford,, Stoney Middleton and the Plague Church at Eyam. PLEDGE APPEAL FOR 2017 – We are blessed to have received promises for extra giving this year of approximately £7,700 (including recovered tax) towards our preferred target of £9,900. We still hope to receive further promises as some church members are yet to respond. Consequently, if you have not done so, please return your pledge form as soon as possible (even if you are unable to increase your giving). REFUGEE APPEAL Abdool from the Broomhill Mosque is close to filling the last of 5 container-loads of aid to go to refugees – this one is bound for Greece. He’s appealing for donations so he can bulk-buy the foodstuffs they so desperately need. If you feel able to give, feel free to talk to Gary, or go to http://familiesrelief.org.uk/ to donate online.

CRC SPRING CONFERENCE. Val Webb is returning to lead a day on Memories Metaphor Myth: talking of God in the 21st century addressing the key issue of how we credibly talk about (and to) God. Booking forms online (stmarkscrc.co.uk) or on the CRC stand at the back of church.

APCM The Annual Parochial Church Meetings will take place on SUNDAY 23 APRIL at 11.15am after a shorter 10.00am Eucharist. These will be followed by a Bring & Share Lunch, to which all are welcome. The sign-up sheet will be available soon. Sue / Briony PCC 2017-2018 At our APCM we will be electing PCC members for the next year. The PCC makes decisions on a broad range of issues affecting church life and helps to shape the vision and strategy of what we do at St Mark’s, so we’re keen to invite people of all ages and stages of life to stand for election. ELECTORAL ROLL The electoral roll is due to be revised at the end of March (please note that this is just a revision and not a new roll). If you wish to stand for PCC election you must be on the electoral roll.
