Organ scholarship – St Mark’s Church Broomhill

We would like to appoint an organ scholar from January 2020 for 18 months. It’s a new venture for us and we’re open to suggestions about how the role should develop but we’re looking for

Someone who can make a regular (not necessarily weekly) commitment to music-making at the church, particularly at Sunday Services, 10am Eucharist and Night Service (currently 8pm but moving to 7pm from Jan 2020).

Someone who can assist with some of the organ playing in services, for instance by accompanying hymns or anthems, playing voluntaries or accompanying other parts of the service

In addition we are looking for someone who is keen to grow as a musician and be involved in leading music at St Mark’s. This might mean enhancing your skills as an organist so that the choir is able to undertake more ambitious anthems, directing the choir (we have a well-balanced choir of around 20 regular singers), leading projects (for instance we host the local primary school and run a music workshop for them) or something else. The music environment at St Mark’s is diverse, and we are looking for someone who is able to share responsibility for leading music at the church.

We can offer

    • A budget (of up to £1,000 managed by the Director of Music)

for training (eg organ lessons, attending courses, exam entry fees)
for equipment (eg sheet music)

  • Support to develop your musical skills
  • A supportive, well-resourced church environment that welcomes new ideas
  • An opportunity to be regularly involved in creative music-making to a high standard
  • Access to a recently renovated Cousans pipe organ

The successful applicant will be supervised by the Director of Music and will be expected to comply with the church’s safeguarding policy (details on St Mark’s website).

For more information about St Mark’s please see www.stmarkssheffield.co.uk or contact David Willington music@stmarkssheffield.co.uk

To express an interest please send a CV and covering letter explaining what you bring to this position to David Willington music@stmarkssheffield.co.uk. Please include the names and contact details of 2 referees.

CLOSING DATE FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST 5pm on Friday January 10, 2020.

INTERVIEW / AUDITION Monday 27 Jan. Applicants will be expected to attend an interview with the Director of Music, Vicar and a Churchwarden. For the audition you’ll be asked to play a hymn (of our choice) and a piece of organ music (of your choice).
