Support for Ukraine

Here at St Mark’s we want to provide information to both our church members and our community about practical ways that we can support Ukrainians fleeing the country at this present time.

We have a small working group looking at how we can support potential hosts and others who might be interested in helping Ukrainians find places of safety in the UK.

The Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme, launched in March, allows individuals, charities, community groups and businesses in the UK to bring Ukrainians to safety – including those with no family ties to the UK.

Phase One of the scheme, operating now, allows sponsors in the UK to nominate a named Ukrainian or a named Ukrainian family to stay with them in their home or in a separate property.

Phase Two, once it is up and running, will enable sponsors to be paired with Ukrainians who have no immediate connections with the UK. More details will be available as and when.

If you want to explore the option of registering as a host, you may find it useful to visit resetuk.org or its partner Sanctuary Foundation. Please let the Working Group know if you register by emailing [email protected] so that we can keep you informed of local support and services. You can also read more on the CofE website: https://www.churchofengland.org/resources/community-action/war-ukraine-responding as this will save people searching through the whole CofE site for the information.

We will be uploading various documents and further links which we hope will be helpful to this page of the website, these are the first three documents:

Events

1          We are planning a meal for Ukrainian guests and their hosts on Friday 20th May, starting at 6.00pm. If you are interested, please send an email to Alison at [email protected] to request a booking form. Places will be limited. Please return your booking form to the above email address by 6pm on Thursday 19th May. We hope to offer this on a monthly basis so please get in touch if you want to be notified of future events.

2          Coffee Morning, Saturday 28th May, 10.30 – 12 noon in St Mark’s Church Upper Room

This is another opportunity for those either hosting Ukrainians or interested in doing so, to meet and share their experiences to date; Ukrainian guests are also most welcome. Our first two were very successful, and we’ve been asked to have more coffee mornings both for those who came and for others interested. We also want to hear your thoughts and ideas on what support you might need and how we could help. Light refreshments will be available.
