Weekly Update – 1st December 2013

GIVING PLEDGES 2014 Please collect a pack from the back of church.  If your details are on the congregational list, you should find a personally addressed envelope; if not, please collect one of the ‘giving packs.’  Thank you.

STATIONS OF LIFE is being launched TODAY – please see the flyers.  To mark the first station, birth, a sculpture by Byron Howard entitled, ‘First Meeting’ is being exhibited in church.  Byron will be talking about his work after the service at 11.30 am.  All welcome.

LIFE CALLING is an open evening on Sunday 8 December at 6.00 pm in the Upper Room for anyone who would like to explore how their faith finds expression through their living.  From parenthood to priesthood, vocations can take many shapes and forms. Please come along to find out more and share your story.

UNWRAPPING CHRISTMAS A fresh look at the gospel stories of Jesus’ birth.  Discover how to read them as the evangelists intended.  Monday 9 December at 7.30 pm in the lounge.  All welcome.

CHRISTMAS EVE NATIVITY We urgently need to recruit more people to stage this year’s play – actors, costumiers, lighting and staging crew, catering etc.  If you are interested in being involved, please sign the list at the back of church or let Anne know.  Thank you.


AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL GREETINGS CARD CAMPAIGN 2013. After morning service for the NEXT TWO SUNDAYS you will be able to sign greetings cards to prisoners of conscience and detained human rights activists including journalists. Please bring smaller cards or postcards suitable for air mail post. It takes only a few minutes to send a message of hope to someone who may think they have been forgotten.

CTBB SHARED LUNCH NEXT SUNDAY at 12.15.  Please sign up to make pies, or to help on the day.

CHILDREN’S SOCIETY It is box opening time again! If you have a home collection box please let me have for opening or if you prefer give me a cheque for the contents ( cheques should be made payable to ‘The Children’s Society’). Many thanks. Susan Whitmill.

CHRISTIAN AID will as usual be singing carols in Fargate THIS SATURDAY. St Marks’ slot is 2.30-3.30 pm, so calling all musicians and all who like singing, wrap up warm and come along Info: Alison (tel: 221 4578)

HAPHAZARD BY STARLIGHT After a very successful book evening, there are copies of Janet Morley’s new Advent book of poetry available for sale at the back of church at £9.

ORGAN APPEAL UPDATE Promised, available and potential funds now total £87,800 towards our target of £100,000.  A wonderful response but more is needed. If you have not yet done so, please return your pledge form to our Treasurer, David Ryder, as soon as possible.  Spare Appeal leaflets and pledge forms are available at the back of church.

“INEQUALITY: HOW IT HURTS US ALL” Sunday 15 December at 6.00 in the Lounge. Whether you have read The Spirit Level or not, you will likely perceive the corrosive growth of inequality in the UK. In this talk Michael Miller will summarise the book’s message, suggesting ways we can get back to a more equal society. All welcome.

FIRE TRAINING SESSIONS will be held in the Upper Room at 11.30 am TODAY and NEXT SUNDAY.  This is a reminder to those invited, but others are welcome. All those in charge of activities in the church are required to do so.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE– THE CLIMATE CHALLENGE If you’ve not already done so, please write to your MP this week.  There is a template letter in the green campaign leaflet which can be downloaded at www.hftf.org.uk.

ALSO a number of people said they would like to enclose leaflets about the campaign with their Christmas cards.  In order to save paper, it would help to know how many. There is now a religious and a non-religious version.  Please put your orders on the sheet at the back of the church. ALSO CLIMATE CAMPAIGN! Michael Bayley is forming a small group to support this campaign. He would be delighted for people to join it, not least to keep it in our prayers. Contact Michael on 258 5248.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH After the morning service on Christmas Day we will once again be providing a traditional turkey dinner for those who would otherwise be on their own.  If you are able to offer any help – either on the day or with the preparation then please contact David Anson on info@adv.co.uk or 229 5478.  If you, or anyone you know in the parish, would like to book for the meal then contact the church office.

ASSIST APPEAL FOR HOSTS Between 21 December – 5 January the night shelter that houses asylum seekers is being forced to relocate and cannot take female clients.  ASSIST is asking if anyone who has a spare bedroom would be prepared to welcome one of these women over the Christmas period. Info on the poster in the foyer.
