CONGRATULATIONS to Ceri Gallivan on qualifying as a GP after 11 year’s hard work. Well done!

ALSO to Mark Newitt on completing the Doctor of Theology and Ministry programme at Durham University and being awarded a doctorate for his thesis, Ritual, Pastoral Presence, and Character Virtues in Healthcare Chaplaincy: A study of chaplains’ support to bereaved parents following the in utero or neonatal death of their baby.

AND AGAIN to Matt Sammon who is now living and working as a teacher in Xiamen, China, and who recently married Frox, a Chinese woman. We wish them all happiness!

CHURCH ACTION ON POVERTY ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE will start in our parish at St Andrew’s URC at 9.30am on Saturday 12 October and finish in the early afternoon at Sacred Heart RC Church in Hillsborough. ST WILFRID’S CENTRE is trying to raise £1.8 million to build a residential block to support the homeless.  The total currently stands at £700,000.  To push this higher, Kevin Bradley, the Director, is accompanying Bishop John Rawsthorne on a 15-mile walk in the Peak District.  He needs our support so please sponsor him generously through using the Virgin Money Giving page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT there will be a concert to celebrate the musical life of St Mark’s on Saturday, 28 September, the anniversary weekend. If will feature works by St Mark’s musicians  past and present, including songs from Cousin John and Lionstale. If you would like to be part of it,  there will be rehearsals in September as follows: Sunday 15th 11.30am – 12.30pm; Thursday 19 Sept 8.00pm – 8.30pm; on the day at 4.00pm. Or see Eve Saunders, David Sanderson or Frances Gray in the meantime.  All welcome –  a date for all our diaries.

ANNIVERSARY MESSENGER The Anniversary version of the Mark’s Messenger is now available and in your pigeonhole if you subscribe.  If not, as usual you can get a copy for the bargain price of 60p – and this month it is very special, a real one-off to celebrate 50 glorious years!

OFFERTORY GIVING CARDS are available for those who give by standing order or some other means apart from the weekly envelope scheme.  Please collect one from the back of church.

CAN YOU HELP? We are looking for volunteers to join our existing team of servers to carry the cross and candles during the 10 o’clock service.  Adults and teenagers, all genders, this is an opportunity for you! Please have a word with Anne in the office or a member of the clergy. Thank you.

HARVEST We’ll be needing lots of preserves to sell at Harvest Festival in aid of CHRISTIAN AID, so please start your bottling and jam and chutney making now!

FRUIT is available from the vicarage garden for anybody who would like to make jam for the Harvest Festival.  Please contact Liz (liz.wallis@sero.co.uk).

AS USUAL, we will be supporting the Archer Project Harvest Appeal at our Festival service on Sunday 6 October.  Tinned foods, dried goods, condiments, basic toiletries – a full list is posted on the notice board outside the chapel.
