AS WELL AS to Ven Martyn Snow who has been appointed Suffragan Bishop of Tewkesbury in the Diocese of Gloucester.

WELCOME to members of Mental Health Uganda (Gulu) who are currently on secondment in Sheffield and worshipping at St Mark’s.  MHU is committed to empowering persons with mental illness to lead dignified lives in war-torn parts of Uganda.

OFFERTORY GIVING CARDS are available for those who give by standing order or some other means apart from the weekly envelope scheme.  Please collect one from the back of church.

ST WILFRID’S CENTRE is trying to raise £1.8 million to build a residential block to support the homeless.  The total currently stands at £700,000.  To push this higher, Kevin Bradley, the Director, is accompanying Bishop John Rawsthorne on a 15-mile walk in the Peak District.  He needs our support so please sponsor him generously through using the Virgin Money Giving page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/

OLIVER! Congratulations to Luke Speddings, who will be in Oliver! at the Crucible.  The performances are 4 Dec -25 Jan.  Well done!

ANNIVERSARY CONCERT there will be a concert to celebrate the musical life of St Mark’s on Saturday, 28 September, the anniversary weekend. If will feature works by St Mark’s musicians  past and present, including songs from Cousin John and Lionstale. If you would like to be part of it,  there will be rehearsals as follows: after choir practice on Thursday 19 Sept; after 10.00 service on Sunday 22 September; on the day at  4.00pm. Or see Eve Saunders, David Sanderson or Frances Gray in the meantime.  All welcome –  a date for all our diaries.

THE BROOMHALL FESTIVAL 2013 THIS Saturday, 31 August 2013, 12 noon to 4.00 pm, in the Broomhall Centre and Jesus Centre, Broomspring Lane. After several years the Festival is being revived with the theme ‘Unity in the community’. It will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Vicki Priestley, at 12.45 pm in the Broomhall Centre. There will be a children’s fancy dress parade, a bouncy castle, activities for all ages, a demonstration by the Unity Gym, a fire engine, and stalls of various kinds. Refreshments will be available. Broomhall is half of our parish so please give this festival your support.  Baking to Sue Hammersley asap please!

CHURCH ACTION ON POVERTY ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE will start in our parish at St Andrew’s URC at 9.30am on Saturday 12 October and finish in the early afternoon at Sacred Heart RC Church in Hillsborough. HARVEST We’ll be needing lots of preserves to sell at Harvest Festival in aid of CHRISTIAN AID, so please start your bottling and jam and chutney making now!

AS USUAL, we will be supporting the Archer Project Harvest Appeal at our Festival service on Sunday 6 October.  Tinned foods, dried goods, condiments, basic toiletries – a full list is posted on the notice board outside the chapel.

PCC REPORT Please find a copy of the summary for the July PCC meeting pinned up on the board in the foyer along with a copy of the approved minutes from May’s meeting. (There was no meeting in June).

The summary is on the notice board instead of in the Mark’s Messenger this month because the September edition of the Mark’s Messenger is a special Anniversary edition with extra articles.

BANG’S 40TH BIRTHDAY PARTY! Join us on Saturday 14 September at 2.30 pm in Victoria Park to celebrate BANG’s 40th! It will be an informal do, bring your own food and drink and something to sit on. Feel free to invite others as well.

CRC ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE To celebrate its 10th and St Mark’s 50th Anniversary CRC has invited James Crossley of Sheffield University to deliver a day conference on ‘The Legacy of Mark’s Gospel,’ – Saturday 14 September, 10.00 am – 4.00 pm; tickets: non-members £12, CRC/PCN; members £10; students £5.  Booking forms on the CRC display.

VOCAL TRAINING 2013 – TRAINING FOR WAR NO MORE. The organisation SPEAK is running a weekend gathering to explore how we can be prophetic voices for peace, justice and creation in an age of militarism, land-grabs and toxic monocultures.  It is to be held at St. Mark’s on 6-9 Sept. with an optional Day of Action on the 9 Sept. COACH TRIP TO YORKSHIRE COAST Saturday 7th September 2013. St. John’s, Ranmoor are having a day at the Yorkshire Coast and inviting people to join them.
