Weekly Update – 2nd February 2014

PLEDGE APPEAL FOR 2014 – To date 91 responses (compared to 113 for the 2013 Appeal) have been received with total extra giving of £9,151 (including recovered tax) promised in a full year towards the £13,400 target. These include 4 new pledges and 49 increases.  Grateful thanks to all who have responded.   We are getting much closer to having sufficient funds to maintain the work and mission of the Church at existing levels but more would help.   Consequently, if you have not done so please return your pledge form immediately.  Spares are available at the back of the Church.  Alternatively, if you are unable to change your giving you can simply send an email to Judith Pitchforth at [email protected]  to confirm.  Thanks, David Ryder, Treasurer.

ISLAMIC AWARENESS WEEK This is intended to educate people about Islam and create bonds between communities.  Hallam University are putting on 2 events: THIS WEDNESDAY; 6pm at Adsetts Centre. Understanding Mary in Islam and Christianity; THIS THURSDAY; 5pm – 8pm, Severn Road. Mosque Open Day. These are open invitations. Please see Anne in the office for more details.

There is a handout available explaining the purpose of the ‘Stations’ project.  The second station is due to be launched at our All Age Service on February 9th

If there is one you would like to be marked, please mention it to Sue Hammersley or Liz Anson.

LIONS Following recent discussions we have made changes to the provision of activities for the ‘Lions’ group. For the past few months we have met at 6-8pm for food, games and chat once a month. This has been well received and will now become a regular feature on the third Sunday of every month in the church lounge. In addition we will now only be meeting on the first Sunday of the month during the 10am service for breakfast and discussion in the Lions’ den. This decision reflects the current make-up of our group and will be constantly under review. For more information speak to  any of the Lions’ leaders or Sue H.

Ian and Liz are grateful for all your concern and care.  Ian is recovering with Nurse Tess on hand (well, foot and tail!) Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.  Any cards sent  to the Vicarage will be redirected.

While Ian is recovering it would be very helpful if church business could be directed to the Churchwardens, Mike Hunt and Gary Grief, and the Associate Vicar, Sue Hammersley then we can decide who’s best to follow it up.

DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS 2014 marks 100 years of the Sheffield Diocese.  There are several celebration events being organised including Services around the Diocese.  Please see the poster at the back of church and let Anne in the office know if you would like to attend any.

CELEBRATION Don Smith will be receiving his certificate for 60 years as a Methodist Local Preacher NEXT SUNDAY.  The service is at 6.00pm at Wesley Hall Methodist Church, Crookes.  It is a Sheffield circuit service and includes reception of three new preachers onto full plan. If anyone would like to attend and celebrate with Don they are welcome to come along.

SUPPORTING PEOPLE IN LATER YEARS There will be an Awareness Day on Saturday 22 February at 9.30am – 3.30pm at St. Columba’s Church, Crosspool.  This will be led by members of the Chaplaincy Team and mental health professionals.  The workshop is free and drinks are provided, but please bring your own lunch.   To book a place contact Briony Broome on 07801 532954 or bri[email protected]  Please see the poster in the foyer for more details.

NEW CAR PARK BARRIER is now installed and working well.  The barrier will be locked shut during the week and will need a code to open it.  All the numbered spaces are allocated for a fee. If you need to park in the church spaces during the week between 9am and 5pm, please apply to Anne and it may be possible to issue you with a permit for a particular day and time.  Please note that the church spaces are often in use in the daytime and must not be used without permission.  Thank you!

FRIENDSHIP CLUB Wednesdays from 1.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. in the church lounge. 5 February:  “Deal or No Deal”.

SUNDAY LUNCH FOR “NEWCOMERS” on Feb 16th at 12.15. If you’ve joined St Mark’s in the last year or so this is an opportunity to get to know a smaller group of people and find out a bit more about what goes on here.  All are welcome so it would help with catering if you could sign on the sheet to say you’re planning to attend.  For more info call Sue Hammersley on 327 6908.

ORGAN APPEAL UPDATE – The Appeal Fund is currently £97,300 just £2,700 short of our target.  It is not too late to give a pledge to meet our target.  Pledge forms to our Treasurer, David Ryder, please.  Given the success of the Appeal, the PCC has decided to enter into a contract as soon as possible with Wood of Huddersfield, Organ Builders, with the work expected to start by May 2014.  Consequently it is now necessary to collect in all promised funds and David Ryder has contacted all those who have given pledges to request their payments.
