Weekly Update – 8th April 2012

THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to the Lent Course, especially Michael Bayley and John Hillman as well as all the group leaders and hosts.  Also, thank you to all who have contributed to our worship through Holy Week, including members of the flower-arranging team.

LOCUM DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Martin Lightowler has agreed to direct on Sunday mornings from 15 April until the end of July and possibly beyond.

CHRISTIAN AID Dates for your diary:

7th May – May Day Trek starting from Bolsterstone. 5, 10 or 15 mile sponsored walk. 12th May – Busk Aid event in Sheffield city centre. Musicians and collectors needed! 13th-19th May – Christian Aid week – parish street collection. 7th July – Sheffield Night Hike, Lodge Moor to Hathersage.  There are letters for those people who kindly took part in last year’s parish house to house collection during Christian Aid week in the pigeon holes at the back of church. This raised over £2,000 in 2011. New collectors are always welcome. If you want to find out more about any of the above events for Christian Aid please contact Helen (2584241) or Alison (2214578)

HOUSE CONTENTS SALE Les Smart, who you may remember, is holding a ‘Make Me An Offer’ house contents sale on the 21st & 22nd April.  Many household items up for grabs – you may get yourself a bargain! See Gary for more information.

CHURCH ELECTIONS for  Churchwardens, Parochial Church Councillors and a Deanery Synod Rep. will take place at the Annual Parochial Meetings.  Nomination forms for the former and a nominations register for the latter can be found on the notice board in  the entrance lobby.  Who would you like to serve as a Churchwarden or represent you on the PCC?  Are you willing to serve?

ANNUAL PAROCHIAL MEETINGS will be held on Wednesday 25 April.  There will be a shared supper at 7.00 pm, followed by the meeting at 8.00 pm.  We will be reviewing the past year and looking forward to the next as well as electing two Churchwardens and up to 18 members of the Parochial Church Council. This are open meetings.  Please sign up at the back if you are able to contribute some food.

ELECTORAL ROLL, the church’s membership list, is being updated. If you are not on the Roll, please complete a form which is available at the back of Church and place it in the box provided. The Roll will be closed on 10 April until after the Annual Church Meetings. Peter Ryder, Electoral Roll Officer.

CRC SPRING CONFERENCE This will be with Tariq Ramadan, Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University.  It promises to be a stimulating and enjoyable day.  Details at the back of

CHURCH CLEANING is now being undertaken by Tim Moore and John Whitmill.  Let’s support them!


SHAN will be ordained Priest by Bishop Steven in St Mark’s on Sunday 20 May at 5.00pm.  This represents an important development in Shan’s ministry so please make every effort to be there. Thank you.

SUNDAY LUNCH We are looking for more people to prepare our Sunday lunches. There will be no lunch for at least the next two Sundays after today – we hope to re-launch it soon after Easter.

ST MARK’S WEEKEND There is now someone at the back of church every Sunday to take bookings as well as further payments for those who have already booked.  Details and application forms are available.  This is definitely an event for ALL the church community!  Remember to bring your Payment Card every time you make a payment.  Thanks.

TROUBLEMAKERS’ WALK: Following the Auction of Promises, this walk will be held at 3.00 pm on Sunday 22 April, Sunday 6 May and Sunday 13 May starting at Paradise Square. CONTEMPLATIVE LEARNING IN COMMUNITY ‘Understanding the Gospel in the biographical narratives of Jesus’ will be the subject of fortnightly discussions taking place with the Multi-faith Chaplaincy and Library Burngreave Ashram on Friday evenings at the Quaker Meeting House.  Please see poster in the foyer for details.

A NEW ‘HOMELESS’ HOSTEL Kevin Bradley of St Wilfrid’s Centre in Queen’s Road has launched an appeal for a new 50 bed hostel for the homeless. To support this worthy cause, BBC Radio Sheffield’s Andy Kershaw is arranging a sponsored 250 mile cycle ride across Scotland in May. Please donate by going to www.justgiving.com/andykershaw01
