Part of our Thinking Faith series, this monthly event explores diverse topics with panel discussions, guest speakers, and time for questions and responses. Join us as we start to explore the spirituality of children by listening to three speakers:
History of Childhood Dr. Emily Baughen
Emily is a Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Sheffield. Her first book, Saving the Children: humanitarianism, internationalism and empire, was published in 2021 and shortlisted for the Royal Historical Society Whitbread Prize. She is now writing Love's Labour, a revolutionary history of childcare, to be published by Penguin Allen Lane. Emily appears regularly on BBC radio 4 and writes about children and politics for Jacobin, Tribune, and the Times Literary Supplement.
Faith Development Canon Dr Jane Brooke
Jane Brooke taught RE for over 20 years working with ages from ages 3 to 18 years . She worked as an adviser delivering professional development for teachers on RE and Spiritual development. As Project Manager, Jane initiated the national celebration of quality RE in schools through the RE Quality Mark. Jane has published teaching materials on teaching RE, Christianity for teachers and introducing Holy Communion into schools. Jane is the interim chair of the Diocesan Board of Education in Sheffield.
Church Schools and the Spirituality of Children Huw Thomas
Huw is the Diocesan Director of Education for Sheffield Diocese. He taught for 25 years in primary education as teacher and headteacher . He was one of the working party that produced the Church of England's Vision for Education and has recently joined the Theological Reference Group for the Church of England's 'Flourish' initiative. Huw has written a number of books on education, and one ('In the Way of the Story') on literary theory as a means of playing with scripture. He's also an Associate Priest in the Parish of Pitsmoor.
